However, the appointments have not been made official by the Taliban yet.

The Taliban appointed former Guantanamo detainee Mullah Abdul Qayyum Zakir as acting Defence Minister of Afghanistan, reported Al Jazeera on Tuesday, citing a source of the group. The Taliban has started appointing senior veterans to important posts with an aim to form a formal government in Afghanistan.

Mullah Abdul Qayyum Zakir was held by the US forces in 2001 and was detained at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba until 2007, after which he was released and handed over to the Afghan government, reported Reuters.

According to reports, Gul Agha is the new Finance Minister and Sadr Ibrahim is the acting Interior Minister of Afghanistan. However, the appointments have not been made official by the Taliban yet.

Meanwhile, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said that Haji Mohammad Idris has been appointed as the acting head of the central bank of the country, Da Afghanistan Bank (DAB).
