Central Government’s Talks with farmers fails

The meeting at the Vigyan Bhavan with the Union Minister of Agriculture Mr Narendra Singh Tomar and his cabinet colleague Piyush Goyal and Junior Industry Minister Som Prakash along with 35 farmer member team on Tuesday ended without any conclusion. The center’s pitch for the formation of a committee was rejected by the farmers’ representatives. A prominent source quoted a farmers’ delegate “Now is not time for a committee”. The second round of talks will now be held on December 3.

Agro Minister Mr. Tomar suggested the formation of a committee, and that the committee should comprise people from the government and agriculture experts to discuss the farm laws. He then asked the farmers present at the meeting to put the names forward of the representatives who would be a part of the committee. After the meeting Mr Tomar said “We wanted a small group but they said we want to talk together. We don’t mind that. We would like them to end the protest and come for talks. But this depends on the farmers”.

On the other hand the prime leader of the farmers’ organization Bharatiya Kisan Union (Ekta Ugrahan) Roop Singh said “We do not accept the government’s proposal to set up a committee. We demand that the government cancels the laws related to agrarian reform. We are not going back down even if the government uses force. Our protest will continue.”

Leader of the All India Kisan Sabha, Wark Singh stated “Tomorrow, there will be an important meeting of the leaders of the farm organization, in which today’s meeting with the government will be reviewed. After this talks between the government and farmers’ organizations will be held every day from December 3. It has been decided that the negotiations between the government and the farmers will continue till the dead lock and dispute are over”.

Dushyant Chautala the deputy CM of Haryana, belonging to the Jannayak Janata Party, who is in alliance with the BJP at the state seemed uncomfortable with the crackdown of the farmers.

A group of top sportsperson and sport coaches from Punjab said they will return their awards and medals and march to Delhi on December 5 to stand in solidarity with the protesting farmers. The farmers began their protest against the center’s farm laws last week and have faced water cannons, tear gas and trenches bravely. According to farmers the new agricultural laws will deprive them from the minimum support price fixed by the government and will leave them at the mercy of the corporate bodies.
