"The cause of the fire is a spark in the SNCU's ventilator," says: Inquiry Report

The inquiry report of the deadly fire that swallowed four newborns at the Special newborn care unit (SNCU) of Civic Hospital says fire-broke due to a ventilator machine plugged in resulted in sparks speeding on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, the hospital authorities declared that only four infants died due to the fire at the Govt. hospital on Monday night, and not more.

On Wednesday, the District collector Avinash Lavania submitted the inquiry report of this incident to the State Govt.

The Paediatrics Department head Jyotsna Shrivastava said the fire broke out in SNCU around 8.30 pm on November 8 when the duty doctor and others plugged in an electric socket to start a ventilator.

The statement of the officials said, "It sparked and fire broke out."

The doctors and staff tried to overcome the impact of ablaze by the fire extinguisher but gradually the smoke filled the room. The impact of smoke and fire was so high that it broke the glass panels of the windows, the officials added.

"Many newborns were rescued but couldn't save four of them," the officials added.

According to Dr Shrivastava, three other infants died but before the time of the incident. Also, some died due to health issues after the day of the incident.

She also added that the infants who suffer from serious health issues are shifter to SNCU.

Almost 40 children were hospitalized in SNCU at the time of the deadly incident.

Out of 4, 3 deceased bodies were handed over to their parents after autopsy.

But the family of one infant expressed suspicion about identity, so the body has been kept in the mortuary and DNA samples were sent for examination, the official statement said.
