Hailed As ‘Hero’ Now Charged With ‘Attempt To Murder’: Farmers Protest.

Hailed as a hero on social media after the video of climbing a police water cannon and turning it off in one of the most iconic moment of the ‘Delhi Chalo’ farmers protest march of farmers towards Delhi, the 26 year old Navdeep Singh of Haryana’s Ambala has now been charged of attempt to murder case. The young man had climbed the blue water cannon vehicle showering protestors in the middle of the winter cold wave in North India on Wednesday.

Navadeep is the son of a farmer leader Jai Singh. He has now been charged with an attempt to murder charges with maximum penalty of life imprisonment, rioting and violating the guidelines for COVID-19 pandemic protocols.

Navadeep spoke to a prominent newspaper where he said that “after my studies, I started doing farming with my father who is a farm leader. I never indulge in any illegal activities and got courage from the commitment of the protesting farmers to climb the vehicle and turn off the tap which was hurting them”. He also added “While protesting peacefully we are demanding passage to Delhi but the police blocked our passage. We have all the right to question the government and protest if any anti-people laws are passed.

The police of the BJP ruling Haryana and Delhi are criticized heavily nationwide for the heavy crackdown of the protesting farmers on the agricultural reforms brought into practice by the central government.

Friday being the third day of the protest the police fired tear gas and water cannons at the farmers who managed to reach Delhi to protest against the farm laws. Hundreds of forces have been deployed by the police at various points of entry to the capital.
