Thick Fog Envelops Delhi, Trains, Flights Affected

Low temperature chills North India…

On Wednesday, 21 December 2022, Delhi woke up to dense fog and shivering cold for the third time in a row.

At the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGI), visibility dropped to 500 metres at 5:30 am, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The IMD said in the morning a dense to very dense layer of fog had covered Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, Delhi, and parts of Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh.

The thick blanket of fog resulted in poor visibility in several cities.

INSAT 3D RAPID Satellite imagery below showed a continuation of a dense fog layer from Punjab and northwest Rajasthan to East UP across Haryana.

A grey circled cloud patch over the central parts of West UP is medium and high clouds associated with the middle tropospheric level westerly trough, and the fog layer lies below it.

As heavy fog enveloped North India, the temperature in Delhi is expected to dip further.

The Sadarjung Observatory, the primary weather station in Delhi on Tuesday, recorded a minimum temperature of 6.3 degrees Celsius, two notches below normal. The maximum temperature is likely to settle around 22 degrees Celsius.

The dense fog also affected railway and air traffic. The official Twitter page of Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) issued an advisory to all passengers saying, "Passengers are requested to contact the airline concerned for updated flight information."

In another statement on Wednesday, the Delhi Airport said that "flights are being diverted or are returning to Delhi due to the worst weather in Chandigarh, Varanasi, and Lucknow."
