Top Wrestlers resumes protest, FIR against WFI Chief

Protesters spent Sunday night sleeping on the footpath…

Prominent wrestlers of India including Vinesh Phogat, Sakshi Malik, and Bajrang Punia have petitioned the Supreme Court for an FIR against Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) head Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh for alleged sexual harassment.

After nearly three months they resumed their protest at Delhi's Jantar Mantar on Sunday against the WFI chief and other trainers for allegedly sexually assaulting female wrestlers.

At the same time, sources have mentioned that the Delhi Police has requested a report from the investigating committee formed by the Union Sports Ministry to investigate the claims.

The WFI chief has been the subject of seven complaints. "As part of the inquiry, we have requested a report from the Sports Ministry's probe committee into the allegations of sexual harassment levelled against the WFI chief," the top official added.

The Union ministry organised a five-member oversight group in January after consultations with wrestlers which is led by famed boxer Mary Kom.

The body was entrusted with overseeing WFI's day-to-day operations. The committee was also tasked with investigating the charges levelled against Brij Bhushan, a BJP politician and a muscleman with a criminal record.

The wrestlers sat on a protest again on Sunday claiming that the promises that were made to them were not held up and their demands had not been fulfilled despite assurances.

Several national award-winning athletes spent the night on the walkway, asking that the government make the oversight committee's conclusions public. Ace wrestler Bajrang Punia had stated that 'all parties are welcome' to participate in their uprising this time, and that they will not back down until action is made against Brij Bhushan.
