Tough fight Between AAP And BJP For Chandigarh Mayoral Polls

The Congress party is out of the race…

Mayoral elections in Chandigarh scheduled for Tuesday, 17 January 2023, there is a strong fight between the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) as both parties have 14 councillors each.

The Congress party has not fielded any candidate for mayoral elections, has six councillors and has decided to opt to stay out of the race, while the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has only one councillor.

The voting for the three posts of mayor, senior deputy mayor, and deputy mayor will start at 11 am at the Assembly Hall of the Chandigarh MCC building.

The BJP has named Anup Gupta as its mayor candidate, while the AAP has fielded its councillor, Jasbir Singh.

For the post of senior deputy mayor and deputy mayor, the BJP has fielded Kanwarjit Rana and Harjeet Singh respectively, while the AAP has fielded Taruna Mehta and Suman Sharma for those posts.

In the 35-member house, both AAP and BJP have 14 members, while six councillors are from the Congress, and one is from the SAD. In the year 2022, BJP managed to win all three posts.

To avoid poaching and horse-trading of councillors, four days ago, the Congress moved their councillors to Kasauli in Himachal Pradesh, the BJP to Morni Hills in Haryana and AAP to Punjab’s Ropar.

Ahead of the mayoral election, the administration has issued prohibitory orders for the municipal corporation building in Sector-17, Chandigarh. Within 50 meters of its periphery, a gathering of 5 or more persons will be prohibited.
