Tunnel To Red Fort Discovered

Ram Niwas stated that the Britishers used this tunnel to transport the freedom fighters to court.

A tunnel-shaped structure was discovered beneath the Delhi Legislative Assembly on Thursday.

Ram Niwas Goel, Delhi Legislative Assembly Speaker, said the tunnel connects the Legislative Assembly to the Red Fort and was used by the British to prevent retaliation when freedom fighters were evicted, as per the sources.

Ram Niwas Goel stated that "When I became MLA in 1993, there were rumors here of a tunnel leading to the Red Fort and I tried to look up its history. But there was no clarity about it." He added, "Now we have the mouth of the tunnel, but we are not going to dig any further because all tunnel roads have been destroyed owing to metro projects and sewer installations."

Ram Niwas stated that the Delhi Legislative Assembly, which served as the Central Legislative Assembly after the capital was moved from Calcutta to Delhi in 1912, was converted into a court in 1926 and the British used this tunnel to transport the freedom fighters to court.

The assembly speaker added that in view of the history of the Delhi Legislative Assembly associated with the independence of the country, he intended to open the gallows room for the tourists by the next independence day and the work for it has already started.

"This place has a very rich history in the context of the struggle for freedom. We intend to renovate it so that tourists and visitors can reflect our history", he said.
