TV news presenter killed in bomb explosion in Afghanistan

The incident took place at 7 am, on Saturday in the Makrorayan-e-char area in the capital city’s Police District 9, where a former Afghan TV presenter and along with his brother and father were killed in a bomb blast.Yama Siawash, worked as a prominent current affairs and political presenter with Tolo News, the country’s biggest private TV channel. He has recently started working as an adviser at Central Bank of Afghanistan.

Ferdaws Farmarz told, a magnetic IED was attached to Siawash’s vehicle which exploded near his residence in the Afghan capital. Sediq Sediqqi, a spokesman for President Ashraf Ghani, also condemned the killing of “one of the most talented television presenter” in Afghanistan.

The death of Siawash drew immediate condemnation from senior Afghan officials. Abdullah Abdullah, who heads the country’s overall peace and reconciliation process said,  “Targeting journalists is targeting the freedom of expression and Siawash’s death is a big loss for our country. This is an unforgivable and unforgettable crime.”

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, but many prominent figures- including politicians, journalists, rights activists and religious leaders- have been killed in targeted attacks in Kabul and other cities amid growing violence and chaos in the country.

On Monday, 2 November, a deadly attack by ISIS terrorists on Kabul University left 22 people dead including students. Another assault took place on October 24 on an educational institution that killed 24 people.
