Twitter Locks Congress Account

Twitter, which is American microblogging and social networking service, has blocked the congress official account and of several congress leaders.

On Thursday, Congress criticized the government for "curtailing freedom of expression," saying the party's Twitter account and the accounts of several of its leaders were temporarily suspended for sharing a photo of a rape victim's family. Ajay Maken, Sushmita Dev and Manickam Tagore were among the temporarily blocked members, congressional officials said.

The party's official identifier posted a screenshot of the Twitter message on Instagram informing the party that their account had been banned.

“The Congress Party's official Twitter account has been blocked by Twitter India. Modi ji, just how scared are you? As a reminder, the Congress Party fought for the independence of our nation, endowed only with truth, non-violence and the will of the people. We then won, we will win again,” read the caption in the screenshot.

Rohan Gupta, the head of the social media division of Congress, accused Twitter of working under government pressure, adding that it had banned 5,000 accounts of its leaders and workers across India. "You have to understand that we cannot be pressured by Twitter or the government."

Twitter insisted on enforcing its rules prudently and impartially, adding that it had taken proactive action on several hundred tweets posting the image in violation of its rules. "(Twitter) ... can continue to do this according to our capabilities," said a Twitter spokesman. "Certain types of private information are more risky than others, and our goal is always to protect people's privacy and security. We strongly encourage everyone on the service to familiarize themselves with Twitter's rules and report anything they do. Opinion violates the rules. "
