Two Journalists Charged With Sedition, Arrested Under UAPA: Manipur

Two Journalists from Manipur arrested under UAPA charged with a case of sedition


The Frontier Manipur a news portal whose editor-in-chief Dhiren Sadokpam and executive editor Paojel Chaoba were arrested on Sunday on sedition charges under the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act over an article that had criticized the state’s militancy movement. Under various sections of IPC  the two journalists of the local news portal have been arrested,which are 124A (sedition), 120B (criminal conspiracy), 505(b) (causing alarm to induce offence against the state) and 34 (common intention) as well as UAPA’s section 39 (supporting terror organization).

According to a prominent news agency the article titled ‘Revolutionary journey in a mess’ was written by M Joy Luwang and on January 8 it was published. In the first information report or FIR that was registered by the police of Manipur the Luwang and the editors were named as perpetrators. The FIR by the police read “His article clearly expressed sympathy and support to the ideologies and activities of the armed revolutionary groups and out rightly called the rule of law of the Union and State government as colonial law…” This has not been the first time arrests in such cases have been made as severe times in the earlier such arrests have been reported from the land of Manipur.
