A significant gas explosion occurred in Nairobi's capital, resulting in at least two fatalities and over 300 injuries on Friday. The incident sent a fiery smoke plume over homes, as reported by authorities and the Kenya Red Cross on the social media platform X.

 

On Friday morning, the police chief for Nairobi's Embakasi neighborhood, Wesley Kimeto, confirmed the deaths of an adult and a minor due to the explosions. The toll may increase as the day progresses. Videos captured by concerned Nairobi residents on their phones depict scenes of distress, with some heard screaming.

 

The Kenya Red Cross reported on social media platform X that coordinated efforts by response units successfully evacuated 271 individuals to various health facilities in Nairobi. Additionally, @EMS_Kenya, working alongside the Kenya Red Cross action team, promptly provided assistance to an additional 27 individuals on-site.

An unnamed eyewitness, speaking to local media, described the scene as having "huge explosions, huge fireballs, people screaming and running everywhere for fear of more explosions."
