Under-Construction Railway Bridge Collapses In Mizoram

17 have died so far...


New Delhi: On Wednesday, 23 August 2023, at least 17 people were killed after an under-construction Railway bridge collapsed in Mizoram.

Officials said many more are feared trapped at the site and efforts are on to rescue them. "There were about 35 to 40 construction workers when the bridge collapsed," they said.

The incident was reported from the Sairang area, about 21 km from Aizawl.

PM Narendra Modi expressed his grief over the incident and announced a compensation of Rs. 2 lakh each for those who died in the accident, and Rs. 50,000 each for the injured.

Mizoram CM Zoramthanga said rescue operations are underway at the accident site.  

"On Wednesday, 23 August 2023, an under construction railway over a bridge at Sairang, near Aizawl collapsed; at least 17 workers died: Rescue is going on. Deeply saddened and affected by this tragedy.

I extend my deepest condolences to all the families who lost their loved ones and wish a speedy recovery to the injured.

Sending gratitude to the people who have come out in large numbers to help with rescue operations," he said on social platform X, previously known as Twitter.
