Underground mine roof collapse burying 4 workers under heap of debris

The collapsed roof was six metres long and three metres wide with a height of two metres that caused death of 4 workers in Mancherial


On Wednesday, four workers of Singareni Collieries died after an underground mine roof collapsed on them in Mancherial district.

The mishap occurred at SRP3 & 3A incline underground mine at Srirampur in Mancherial district and four workers were buried under a heap of debris. An official from Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) said “The workers were engaged in roof stitching work in the underground mine. Suddenly part of the roof fell at 10:30 am. The collapsed roof was six metres long and three metres wide with a height of two metres.” The workers trapped below it lost their lives.

 

SCCL chairman and managing director N Sridhar called for an internal probe to find out the reasons behind the sudden collapse. The families of the miners protested demanding more safety measures for their kin.

 

Witnesses said that there were 21 workers, including miners and the supporting staff in the mine, raising apprehension that there might be more people who could be trapped in the mine. Later, in the evening it was cleared that the workers are safe.

 

The deceased workers have been identified as B Laxmaiah (60), V Krishna Reddy (57), G Satyanatayana Raju (32) and R Chandrasekhar (32), all of whom belonged to neighboring areas. “Only for died in the accident. No other workers got trapped in the mine. We were informed that the rest of the workers came out of the mine after the incident. One body has been retrieved and efforts are on to take out the other three bodies,” Jaipur ACP G Narender said.

 

On hearing the news, senior officials of SCCL and the police rushed to the spot. Family members of the worker’s union representatives staged a protest demanding the SSCL authorities to improvise their safety measures to ensure such incidents don’t happen again.

 

The SCCL authorities pacified the protesters and offered job in position of choice to one of the deceased employ’s family members and also promised a compensation between Rs 70 lakh and Rs 1 crore.
