UP Police reaches Punjab to take custody of MLA Mukhtar Ansari

Mukhtar Ansari has been lodged in the Ropar jail since January 2019 in connection with an extortion case.

Uttar Pradesh Police personnel reached Rupnagar district of Punjab on Tuesday to take custody of gangster-turned-politician Mukhtar Ansari, who faces trial in several cases in Uttar Pradesh, officials said on Monday. Around seven vehicles of the Uttar Pradesh Police reached the Rupnagar Police Lines around 4:30 am, which is around four kilometres away from the Ropar jail, the officials said. Mukhtar Ansari has been lodged in the Ropar jail since January 2019 in connection with an extortion case.

The Punjab Home Department had asked the Uttar Pradesh government to take custody of the jailed BSP MLA by April 8. Superintendent of Police (Banda) Siddharth Shankar Meena said, “A police team has left for Punjab today to bring Mukhtar Ansari. The team will take all the security measures required in bringing him.”

Considering the plea of the Uttar Pradesh government, the Supreme Court had directed the Punjab government on March 26 to transfer Mukhtar Ansari to Banda jail in UP in two weeks. Following the court's order, the Punjab Home Department wrote a letter and asked the Uttar Pradesh additional chief secretary (Home) to make suitable arrangements for Ansari’s transfer. It also said that Ansari suffered from certain medical conditions and the same may be kept in mind while making arrangements for his transfer.
