UPSC Civil Services Exam 2021, Extra Chance Denied by Supreme Court

In a February 5 hearing, the government recommended candidates who have exhausted their chances an extra one, as an exception. Supreme Court verdict on whether there will be another chance for examination.

The Supreme Court has given its final verdict on the plea to give another chance for UPSC Civil Services Examination. In a February 5 hearing, the government recommended candidates who have exhausted their chances an extra one, as an exception, but the court advised it against this, while it said the government is free to exercise its discretion in addressing the grievances of the petitioners.

On Wednesday, the supreme court declined to give an extra chance to appear for the Civil Services Examination in 2021 to aspirants obstructed by age or number of attempts from taking it, after some of them approached the apex court citing difficulties in preparation that affected their performance in the October 2020 exam.

Some candidates in the Supreme Court had petitioned that the candidates for whom the UPSC Civil Services Examination 2020 was the final attendant, be given another chance. It was argued that due to corona infection many candidates were not able to prepare for the examination properly. In such a situation, the candidates for whom the last appearance was in 2020, should be given another chance to appear in the examination.

Following this petition, the Center agreed to give the government one more chance to the candidates with the last attachment. But those whose age limit was over in 2020 were not persuaded to exempt them. Now the Supreme Court has refused to give a second chance to all the candidates who have finished the last and the age limit. While delivering the verdict, the court said just one word - Dismissed.

The Supreme Court had asked the Center to consider giving relaxation in the age limit even once. But the central government was not in this favor. The government had said in the court that even if the age limit is relaxed, only 2,236 candidates will be extra.

It is worth noting that the UPSC Civil Services Preliminary Examination 2020 was conducted in October 2020. The examination was delayed due to a corona infection. Now the candidates are waiting for the UPSC Civil Services Exam 2021 notification. The notification was not being issued as the case was pending in the Supreme Court. Now the notification will be released soon on the website upsc.gov.in.
