US House passes $1.9 trillion COVID-19 relief bill, forwards it to Senate

The proposal has been sent to the Senate for its approval next week.

The House passed the bill of a $1.9 trillion relief package for coronavirus on Saturday. The proposal has been sent to the Senate for its approval next week. This is the first big legislative initiative taken by President Joe Biden after coming to power. The House approved the bill in a 219-212 mostly party line vote as two Democrats joined all Republicans in opposing it.

A sudden rise in the Covid cases and surge in the death toll that crossed 500,000 in the United States has led to measures that need to be taken to curb the pandemic. The move has been backed by President Joe Biden and the Democrats describing it as a moral duty to pass the bill. The bill also includes a provision to raise the minimum wage to $15 an hour but the language will be removed from the final version due to a Senate ruling.
