Uttarakhand Chief Minister apologises amid "ripped jeans" row

Referring to the remark made earlier, Mr Rawat said that he had only talked about the home environment which is applicable to him as well.

Amid row over "ripped jeans" remark by Uttarakhand Chief Minister Tirath Singh Rawat, he apologised on Friday but maintained his stand on objection to ripped jeans. Mr Rawat apologised for the remark if it has hurt anybody but repeated his point of view that he has no problem with jeans but ripped jeans.

Referring to the remark made earlier, Mr Rawat said that he had only talked about the home environment which is applicable to him as well. The CM said that we should inculcate discipline and good values in children so that they never fail in future and added that he had made those comments at a programme that was held to keep children away from evils of the society.

Mr Rawat said that he was from a rural background and while recalling his past, he said during schooldays, if his pants got torn, he would cover it with a patch out of fear of the teacher. Mr Rawat had made controversial comments on Tuesday by saying that women who wear "ripped jeans" set a "bad example" for children and the society.

The CM's wife Rashmi Tyagi Rawat also supported him and said that his statement had been twisted to give another direction to the story. She added that his statements meant to impart wisdom about culture.
