West Bengal police held Jharkhand MLAs

The Police confiscated Rs 49 Lakh from 3 MLAs…

The Howrah police arrested three Jharkhand MLAs on Sunday, Irfan Ansari, Rajesh Kachchap and Naman Vixel Kongari. The three MLAs were detained in West Bengal on Saturday and a huge amount of cash was found in their vehicle, as per the officers on the scene.

The cash confiscated by them was Rs 49 Lakhs, the police informed. The police also added that the driver and an associate were also arrested for being accomplices.

“This is a huge sum of unaccounted money. From where they got the cash is part of the investigation.

For now, five people have been arrested because they failed to give a reasonable explanation for the cash,” said SP Howrah (Rural) Swati Bhangalia. Swati Bhangalia also added that an investigation is underway. The police also reported that all five were immediately arrested after prolonged questioning for over 24 hours.

The Jharkhand-based MLAs were travelling from Jamtara in Jharkhand to East Midnapore in West Bengal via road where the police had intercepted their car in Howrah.

In investigation, it was revealed that the MLAs had gone to Guwahati on Friday and returned on Saturday, according to the police sources. However, when asked about their visit they were unable to give a proper explanation, as per an officer.

An FIR has been lodged against the three MLAs, the driver and the associate at the Panch; a police station under section 420 (cheating and fraud) 120B (criminal conspiracy) 171E (bribery) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and section 8/9 of the prevention of corruption act.
