Woman Gang Raped By Husband, Friends Over Dowry In Kanpur

Husband’s demand for Cash and Car!


A woman was allegedly gang-raped by her husband and his friends after her family was not able to fulfil his dowry demand. The incident took place in Kanpur’s Chakeri area.

On Wednesday, The woman’s family registered a complaint against her husband and his friends for harassing and attempting rape at the Chakeri police station.

The woman told the police that she got married on March 6, 2020, and ever since then, her husband and sister-in-law demanded Rs 2 lakh and a car in dowry. When their demands were not met, her in-laws locked her up in a room.

Further, she said that her husband brought three of his friends one day and the four of them gang raped her. She told the police that her husband also tried to set her on fire by pouring petrol when she protested against this.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Mrigank Pathak said a case has been registered against the accused involved for assault and action will be taken against them after an investigation.

The Prison Statistics India report for 2020 that the 12,631 inmates convicted for rape accounted for 67. 9% of the 18,615 convicts involved in offences against women and 24. 5% were serving their sentence in cases of dowry deaths.

UP reported the highest number of convicts (4,760) followed by MP (2,944) and Jharkhand (1,196) accounting for 25. 6%, 15. 8% and 6. 4% of the total convicted inmates lodged under offences against women, respectively, data from January 1st to December 31st.
