You gave birth to 2, why not 20?’ Uttarakhand CM on Centre's ration scheme

Uttarakhand Chief Minister's latest comment came after recent "ripped jeans" remarks that created a row throughout the country.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Tirath Singh Rawat on Sunday said the poor families who received 10 kg ration should have had 20 children to get more ration from the central government scheme. "Every household was given five kg rations. If 10 (people in a home) got 50 kg, then 20 got a quintal (100 kg). But some were jealous that two people got 10 kg and 20 got a quintal. Why? When there was time you only gave birth to two... why not 20?" said Mr Rawat at an event on International Forests Day in Nainital district.

According to the Central Government's scheme PM Garib Kalyan Yojana, five kg of food grains and one kg of pulses per person per household have been provided since the pandemic hit the country. On the other hand, the chief minister during his speech made a factual error by confusing Britain with America. Referring America as the country which enslaved India for 200 years, Mr Rawat said, " America, which enslaved us for 200 years, which ruled the world, under whose empire it was said the didn't set... recorded more than 2.75 lakh deaths due to Covid-19 and is still struggling," commenting on how India tackled the pandemic better than other countries, reported The Times of India.

Last week, Mr Rawat had made controversial comments such as women who wear "ripped jeans" set a "bad example" for children and the society. He later apologized for the comments but maintained his stand on objection to ripped jeans.
