Young Afghan footballer Zaki Anwari fell to death from US plane, says sports federation

A government institution confirmed the news through a Facebook post on Thursday.

Young Afghan footballer Zaki Anwari, who played for the national youth team fell to death after he clinged to a US military plane that airlifted people from the Kabul airport, a sports federation has confirmed. A government institution, The General Directorate of Physical Education and Sports of Afghanistan that worked with sporting groups, confirmed the death of Zaki Anwari in the tumult that erupted at the Kabul airport this week.

The group said in a Facebook post on Thursday," Anwari, like thousands of Afghan youths, wanted to leave the country but fell off a US plane and died."

In a harrowing video that went viral on social media, several people were seen running, desperately trying to get hold of the US Air Force plane while it was gathering speed on the runway. In other visuals, two people could be seen falling to their deaths from the C-17 aircraft which was several feet high in the sky after the take-off.

The US military confirmed that human remains were later found in a wheel well. It added that investigations were ongoing regarding the reported deaths linked to the C-17.
