5,108 New COVID-19 Cases In India In 24 Hours

Active caseload currently stands at 45,749!


New Delhi: On Wednesday, India reported 5,108 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the total number of infections to 4,45,10,057.

The country also reported 19 new Covid related deaths in the last 24 hours, taking the death tally to 5,28,216.

India's active caseload has reached 45,749 which accounts for 0.1 percent of the total cases.

The current recovery rate stood at 98.71 percent. As many as 5,675 recoveries were made in the last 24 hours, taking the tally of total recoveries to 4,39,36,092.

BA.4.6, a subvariant of the omicron Covid variant which has been quickly gaining traction in the US, is now confirmed to be spreading in the UK.

The latest briefing document on Covid variants from the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) noted that during the week beginning August 14, BA.4.6 accounted for 3.3% of samples in the UK. It has since grown to make up around 9% of sequenced cases.

Similarly, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, BA.4.6 now accounts for more than 9% of recent cases across the US.

The variant has also been identified in several other countries around the world.

BA.4.6 is a descendant of the BA.4 variant of omicron.

BA.4 was first detected in January this year, in South Africa and has since spread around the world alongside the BA.5 variant.
