67 Tested Covid Positive in Maharashtra Old Age Home

Patients admitted to a civil hospital in Thane district


Mumbai: 67 residents out of which 62 of them were fully vaccinated, of an old age home in Maharashtra's Thane have tested positive for covid-19 said officials showed concerns over a new COVID-19 variant that has again set off alarm bells across the world. The area has now been declared a containment zone as a precautionary measure.


On Saturday, Team of government doctors visited the Matoshree old age home in Bhiwandi and tested 109 inmates after several residents reported symptoms of the virus. This is one of the biggest clusters to be detected in Thane district recently.

 

All the affected Patients were admitted to a civil hospital in Thane district.

 

District Health officer Dr Manish Renge said to PTI, "After complaints of ill-health by a couple of inmates, a team of doctors on Saturday tested 109 persons at the Matoshree old age home located at Khadavali."

 

Dr Kailash Pawar, Civil surgeon, Thane Civil Hospital said, "Samples of 15 patients have been sent for genome sequencing to detect the new variant."

 

All senior citizens there and five were employees of the old age home.

 

The district administration said, Out of all the patients, 41 are suffering from co-morbidities, adding that 30 of them are asymptomatic.

 

They further said, Sorgaon village, which has a population of 1,130, has been declared as a containment zone and other local residents are also being surveyed. 

 

The mayor said, Passengers arriving at Mumbai airport from South Africa, where a new coronavirus variant 'Omicron' has been detected, will now be quarantined. The new strain has been described by the WHO as a "variant of concern". Genome sequencing of passengers, if found positive, will also be done
