Ashes 2021: Australia has won the 1st Test against England

Australia defeated England by 9 wickets to take a 1-0 lead in the series

Australia has defeated the visitors England on the fourth day of the test by 9 wickets, taking place a Gabba in Brisbane on Saturday.

Australia is now leading by 1-0 in the five-match series.

Australia chased down the target pretty easily; Alex Carey was the only wicket to fall in Australia’s second innings. The hosts needed just 20 runs to win in Brisbane after another English batting collapse.

The match was resumed on 220/2 on the fourth day, where England batting collapsed in the morning session as Nathan Lyon took 4 wickets for Australia. Lyon has surpassed 400 test wickets for Australia.

David Malan (82) and skipper Joe Root (89) tried to fight back on Friday but were unsuccessful in front of Australian bowling. They were the first to depart, followed by the likes of Ollie Pope (4), Ben Stokes (14) and Jos Buttler (23). The hosts chased down the target of 20 in 5.1 overs.

Travis Head won the man of the match award as his brilliant knock of 152 took Australia to a first-innings total of 425.

The Australian side was led by Pat Cummings. He became the second Australian to claim a five-wicket haul on his captaincy debut. The right-arm bowler achieved this feat by taking 5/38 in 13.1 overs on the opening day of the first test.

“Congrats to Pat Cummings and the Aussie team on going 1-0 up in the Ashes, See you all in Adelaide, Should be another ripping test match.” Shane Warne tweeted Australia was last defeated by India in Gabba after 33 years.
