Bosphorus boxing tournament: Nikhat Zareen startles world champion Ekaterina to enter quarterfinals

The Indian pugilist scored 5-0 against the Russian boxer on the second day of the tournament on Wednesday.


India's Nikhat Zareen startled world champion Paltceva Ekaterina and entered into the women's 51 kg quarter-finals with ease at the Bosphorus boxing tournament that was held in Istanbul. Ms Zareen who is an Asian Championships bronze medallist, scored a stunning score 5-0 on the second day of the tournament on Wednesday and left the Russian boxer flabbergasted.

The Indian boxer will have another tough bout against two-time world champion Kazakhstan's Kyzaibay Nazym in her last-eight round. Meanwhile, 2013 Asian champion Shiva Thapa, Sonia Lather and Parveen also won in their respective categories and entered into the quarter-finals.

Thapa won against Kazakhstan's Smagulov Baghtiyov 3-2 in the men's 63kg division. World championship silver medallist Lather (57kg) and Parveen (60kg) beat Surmeneli Tugcenaz and Ozyol Esra 5-0 in their respective women's second round matches. However, Duryodhah Negi (69kg), Brijesh Yadav (81kg) and Krishan Sharma ( 91kg) lost in their preliminary round bouts.

The six Indian boxers will fight in their respective quarter-final bouts on the third day. Zareen, Lather, Parveen and Jyoti (69kg) will be seen in action in the women's category while Thapa and Solanki will fight in the men's competition.
