Building that blossom in February; Now and Then

New Parliament versus older one

Our 14th Prime Minister has decided to build a new parliamentary house making the exciting one a heritage. There are some facts and the journey of our still standing parliamentary house.

1. The existing building is a contemporary British building, built by Edwin Lutyens and Herbert Baker who were responsible for planning and building New Delhi.

2. The foundation stone of the existing Parliament was laid on February 12, 1921 and the construction took six years at the cost Rs 83 lakh at that time. The opening ceremony was held on January 18, 1927 by the then General Secretary of India, Lord Irwin. The new building will accommodate 64,500 square feet.

3. The new building will have a large Constitutional Hall that will showcase India's democratic values, Parliament's lounge, library, multi-committee rooms, dining areas and ample parking, according to the report.

4. In the new building, the Lok Sabha room will seat 888 people, with Rajya Sabha having 384 members' seats. The Lok Sabha Room will have the option to increase its residential capacity to 1,224 members during the meeting. This is to keep in mind the future increase in the number of members of both houses.

5. In September this year, Tata Projects Limited won an application to build a new Parliament building. The new building will be built next to the existing one under the Central Vista reconstruction project.

6. The existing building of the House of Assembly will be re-constructed in a manner appropriate to provide functional facilities for Parliamentary events, to ensure its use.

7. An existing building is a large circular structure 560 meters wide. The House of the Estate Parliament is enclosed by a red decorative stone wall or metal grills with metal gates that can be closed if necessary. The building has twelve gates.

Apart from its beautiful structure the building has seen the rise, fall of some great leaders, and has always welcomed them with the warm chair. The stories about it have been written in books, it has been a part of beautiful poetries. Some historic decisions that framed India’s bright future have been taken there.

As the Prime Minister will lay the foundation stone of the new parliamentary house, we all are going to enter a new era where The house will be retiring and now it stands as a symbol of independent India, India that fought for its right every now and then with the power of its democracy.
