Cold Wave Grips North India
New Delhi: The National Capital and parts of north India woke up to shivering cold with the weather department predicting cold wave conditions to prevail over the next few days too.
Temperatures have dipped in Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan and Delhi over the last week with the onset of severe cold wave.
In Delhi, On Sunday, the mercury plunged to 5.3 degrees Celsius - three notches below normal - making it the coldest Christmas in the city in years, while dense fog covered Haryana, Punjab and several parts of Rajasthan.
Most parts of these states have been witnessing minimum temperatures in the range of 3 to 7 degree Celcius, officials said, adding that low visibility due to foggy weather affected road and train movement at several places.
According to the Indian Meteorological Department (Met), foggy conditions were likely to prevail in Haryana, Punjab, and parts of Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh till December 27.
In Kashmir, cold conditions further intensified as the minimum temperature dipped several degrees below the zero degrees.
Kashmir is currently under the grip of 'Chilla-i-Kalan' - the 40-day harshest winter period when a cold wave grips the region and the temperature drops considerably leading to the freezing of water bodies as well as the water supply lines in several parts of the valley.
