Controversy over Hilsa seat in Bihar elections 2020

Dispute Arises On Bihar Polls Hilsa Constituency.

While the Bihar elections might have reached their logical end, the controversies related with the elections refuse to subside. In a surprising development,  Chief Minister Nitish Kumar's Janata Dal United won the Hilsa constituency by just 12 votes. The Hilsa seat result has been contested by the opposition Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) of Tejashwi Yadav.

While the official Election Commission's website claimed JDU's Krishnamurari Sharan aka Prem Mukhiya won 61,848 votes surpassing RJD's Atri Muni or Shakti Singh Yadav who managed 61,836 votes. However the RJD alleged an attempt to falsely declare the Hilsa seat as JDU’s win in Bihar. its candidate has been falsely declared the winner of the polls by over 500 votes, said  RJD.

RJD also tweeted ‘The returning officer had declared RJD candidate Shakti Singh from Hilsa assembly constituency as the winner by 547 votes. He was told to wait for issuing the victory certificate. But then the returning officer receives a call from the Chief Minister’s residence and the officer suddenly says that the RJD candidate lost by 13 votes due to postal ballots being cancelled’.The opposition alliance also claimed that many of their candidates were not granted the winning certificates due to the pressure from the Chief Minister of Bihar Nitish Kumar and his government. RJD claimed its alliance had won 109 seats instead of 110.The Election Commission (EC) declared that the candidate from JDU got 232 postal votes and RJD candidate got 233 postal votes.

The Election Commission on the other hand refuted all allegations, in a late-night press conference organized by it and stated that ‘We are not under any pressure’.
