Couple’s Honeymoon trip that ought to be a fond memory became a death trap

Newly married couple went for a gifted honeymoon trip to Qatar and were arrested for drug related charges


A gift that cost a Mumbai based couple 10 years of imprisonment. The couple, Oniba and Shareeq since one year are in Qatari Jail for drug related charges. They were sent to jail shortly after landing in the Middle Eastern country. The relative who arranged the trip for them packed 4kg hashish in their luggage.

Tabassum Riaz Quereshi, the one who sponsored the trip as a belated wedding gift sent them on 6th of July 2019. The following day the couple landed on Hamad International Airport and were taken straight to the prison for carrying drugs in their luggage.

In the midst of this Oniba was pregnant with her first child. The couples were told that in the package there is some tobacco for a friend who resides in Doha.

When the couples visited jail they were sentenced to 10 years in prison and were fined with one crore for drug trafficking. Now after so long the NCB (Narcotic Control Bureau) and Mumbai Police’s investigation revealed that the couples aunt plotted the whole scene.

Last year in September Tabassum and her associate were arrested by Mumbai Police. However, they were released on bail.

As the Sushant Case gave a Drug angle, with it many drug rackets were trapped. And on October 14th Nizam and Shaheeda were arrested in connection with a seizure of 1.4 kg charas in Chandigarh. As the interrogation proceeded they came clear and told that Tabassum and their associate sent the couple to Qatar and concealed drugs in their baggage. Tabassum is on the run.

On September 27th 2019, Shakeel Ahmed Qureshi Oniba’s father seeking help wrote to NCB for couples release.

On Thursday, NCB Director General Rakesh Asthana visited the agency’s Mumbai Office and took stock of current cases, including of the couples. NCB indicated that it will contact Qatari Authorities through diplomatic channels and seek the release of the coupe. Oniba gave birth to her baby in March this year.
