Delhi Chandni Chowk Market will remain closed until April 25 due to an increase in no of cases

Delhi Chandni Chowk market will remain closed until April 25 due to a sharp increase in COVID-19 cases, the trade association said on Sunday. The Delhi Kirana Committee of the Khari Baoli Market and the Chemical Merchant Association of Tilak Bazaar also announced the closure of the markets until April 21.

"Today Chandni Chowk Sarv Vyapar Mandal in an emergency meeting with his members decided to ask their members to continue their closure until April 25 due to the serious state of the virus that is spreading. We will make a decision after examining the situation next Sunday," said Chandni Chowk Commercial President Sanjay Bhargava.

"The most frightening thing is the increase in the no of cases and shortage of hospital beds, oxygen, respirators and medicines, and other medical facilities essential during the epidemic," he added.

Many market unions on Friday called for a stronger end of the COVID-19 agreements and pointed out that a lockdown is not a solution. Looking at the current state of COVID-19, a meeting was held between all major retail markets and it was suggested that there should be firm enforcement of COVID-19 processes during the day and rather than just relying on measures such as home arrival time/weekend arrival time and locking.

In a joint statement issued by more than a dozen market organizations, they expressed the same view that implementing vacancies is by no means the solution to the current epidemic. The curfew over the weekend, aimed at breaking a series of coronavirus-infected infections, closed at 10 pm on Friday and will continue until 5 am on Monday. Delhi on Sunday reported 25,462 cases of COVID-19, the highest one-day rate in the national capital to date, according to data shared by the Department of Health. The city also reported 161 deaths, with a recovery rate of 29.74 percent, the highest ever.
