Discus thrower Kamalpreet Kaur finishes 2nd in qualification round to enter finals

In the third and final attempt, Ms Kaur threw the discus to a distance of 64m and became one of the only two automatic qualifiers for the finals.


Indian discus thrower Kamalpreet Kaur gave one of her best shots and finished second in the qualification round to enter finals of the ongoing Tokyo Olympics on Saturday. In the third and final attempt, Ms Kaur who hails from Punjab, threw the discus to a distance of 64m and became one of the only two automatic qualifiers for the finals. The other thrower who directly got selected for the final round is Valarie Allman of America (66.42m).

The 25-year-old Indian made a remarkable score in qualification B as she even crossed Croatia's defending gold-medallist Sandra Perkovic (63.75m), who qualified at third and reigning world champion Yaime Perez (63.18m) of Cuba, who qualified at seventh. The final game will take place on August 2.

Since, each competitor gets three chances, Ms Kaur scored 60.29m in the first attempt, 63.97m in the second and her final best attempt of 64m gave her the opportunity to compete in the finals. One should either touch 64m to enter the finals or the selection is done on the performance of 12 best performers in the two qualifying rounds.
