DU researchers discover new frog species, name it after renowned plant geneticist

The species was discovered from the Western Ghats biodiversity hotspot, extending along the southwest coast of the Indian Peninsula.


Team of Researchers from Delhi University have discovered a new frog species —Minervarya Pentali found in the Western Ghats, the new frog species -Minervarya Pentali named given by Deepak Pental, former DU Vice-Chancellor, and plant geneticist .The species was discovered from the Western Ghats biodiversity hotspot, extending along the southwest coast of the Indian Peninsula , moreover, the researcher exclaim that the new species is indigenous from the southern Western Ghats.

In the statement from the researcher, Dr. Sonali Garg, lead author of the study says, the species is found from the wayside vegetation at multiple localities in Kerala and Tamil Nadu in the monsoon season, they claim the species as the smallest flog known Minervaryan frogs, moreover, they add due to which they failed to notice.

From the study of ten years, it has been found out from the biology Minervarya,which  has a resolved identity due to classifying organisms of all known members of the genus from Peninsular India.The new frog species-Minervarya Pentali named given by Deepak Pental as he is an enthusiast member of Systematics Lab at the University of Delhi,  the discovery and description of nearly one-fourth of all known Indian amphibians have been carried out, adds Professor S. D. Biju.
