Dual murder in Kolkata, Accused on run

Subir Chaki and his driver murdered by the maid’s son over property dispute

On Sunday, dead bodies of Subir Chaki, the managing director of a prominent engineering firm Kilburn Engineering and his driver Robin Mandal were found. Their bodies had multiple stab injuries on the legs, back and neck. They were found lying on different floors of senior corporate executive’s ancestral home in Gariahat, South Kolkata. On Wednesday, the police arrested the 42-year-old maid, Mithu Halder after she confessed to conspiring the crime with her elder son Vicky who is a key suspect in the murder case.

Some blood-stained clothes have been seized from her rented house in Diamond Harbour which is 50km away from where the murder took place. She has been held accountable for aiding her son and trying to destroy the evidence. Mr. Chaki’s wallet, ring and gold chain has been retrieved from Mithu’s residence. On interrogation the woman revealed that initially her son and his friends intended to attack and loot Mr. Chaki but was recognized by the executive. He then stabbed Mr. Chaki and his driver before fleeing.

As per the sources, Vicky was a small-time broker who wanted to strike a deal with Mr. Subir Chaki on the house that he was selling knowing very well that a high valued deal was beyond him. The CCTV footage shows them stepping inside the household. The police have tracked a third suspect from Sonarpur. Supposedly, he acted as a linkman between Chaki’s driver and prospective drivers. As per sources Mithu’s younger son and a relative has been detained though it is not confirmed.

Apparently, Vicky and his friends are shifting hideouts and changing phones while on the run. Joint CP (crime) Murlidhar Sharma said the investigation is still going on and those others involved are being tracked.  Both Mithu and her son Vicky were earlier arrested for attempting to kill Mithu’s husband. They were later released on bail. The cops summoned atleast three property dealers from Gariahat and Salt Lake to record their statements at Lalbazar.
