Excluding Maharashtra, Covid 19 cases surge in 7 other states

Covid cases on high rise in India

With Maharashtra grabbing the top spot on headlines regarding the resurgence of Covid 19 cases, several other states are also following the same trajectory slowly, exhibiting measurable rise in infections recently. Around 16 out of 36 states and UTs in India have reported an alarming spike in daily cases. The increase was not threatening in around half of the 16 where it was below 5% but still this is an unavoidable indication towards a new layer of COVID 19 infections if the same trend persists.

As of now, 7-8 states/UTs require attention and continuous monitoring based on last week's hike. Maharashtra which had been an epicenter of cases, led the list with 81% rise, while Madhya Pradesh recorded a rise of 43%, Punjab of 31%, Jammu and Kashmir of 22%, Chhattisgarh 13% and Haryana 11%. Delhi witnesses a rise of 4.7%. Chandigarh also saw a rise of 43% but the number of cases stood low at 187. On the other hand, Karnataka (4.6%) and Gujrat (4%) showed modest increases but are moving towards another peak. Karnataka reported 2879 cases between 15 to 21 February, standing fourth highest after Maharashtra, Kerala and Tamil Nadu. Gujarat's last week count was 1860. Although Delhi recorded a 4.7% rise but the number of active cases were relatively low with 958 cases last week.

On Monday, India had shown another sign of resurgence by recording 10,570 cases. This was the highest count for Monday in the last 6 weeks as Monday usually records less number of cases due to lower testing and staff shortages. The seven day average in daily cases rose for the eighth day to 12,981. Still there's a sigh of relief as the death toll isn't rising. On Monday, 77 deaths occured, the lowest count recorded since May 3 last year. Viewing the stats of the last six days, Maharashtra recorded a slip dip in number of cases which has been attributed to fewer tests than usual. But the curves of Vidarbha region are astonishing. Maharashtra recorded 5218 cases with 18 fatalities, the lowest in two weeks. Mumbai alone reported 761 cases with 4 deaths which is the lowest in the past four days.

In Maharashtra, majority cases are cited from Mumbai circle, including MMR at 1364 cases followed by Akola at 1154 cases. Nagpur stands at third with 946 cases.
