Former India defender Chinmoy Chatterjee dies

Chinmoy Chatterjee was also a part of the Arun Ghosh-coached Indian team at the 1978 Bangkok Asian Games where he finished fourth in the quarterfinal league.


Former India defender Chinmoy Chatterjee, who played for the three Maidan heavyweights in his prime in the era of 1970-the 80s, died on Sunday due to cardiac arrest at his Khardah residence. The 68-year-old was also a part of the Arun Ghosh-coached Indian team at the 1978 Bangkok Asian Games where they came fourth in the quarterfinal league.

Mamata Banerjee shared the news of his death through her Twitter media handle. The tweet read that she felt sad to hear about the demise of footballer Chinmoy Chatterjee. She wrote that as he had contributed so much to the world of football, he will be remembered by all and paid her condolences to his family and fans.

He switched from Mohun Bagan to arch-rivals East Bengal and played from 1976-79 and 1982-86. The team won the Calcutta Football League (CLF) thrice when he played for the team.

After his retirement he worked as assistant coach of East Bengal with PK Banerjee and Shyam Thapa. In 1981, he also played a central role in Mohammedan Sporting’s CFL triumph. In addition, he also represented Bengal in the Santosh Trophy four times, which made team champions twice.

Chatterjee is survived by his wife, one son, and a daughter.
