FSSAI Makes BIS Certification to be Mandatory for Packaged Drinking Water Companies.

BIS certification mandatory for bottled water companies. FSSAI gave this instruction in a letter to the Food Commissioners. These instructions will come into effect from April 1, 2021.


Selling bottled water will not be easy from April 1,2021. FSSAI has made the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) certification mandatory for bottled water and mineral water manufacturers to obtain licenses or to register.

Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has made the certification of the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) mandatory for obtaining or registering licenses for bottled water and mineral water manufacturers. The FSSAI has given this mandate in a letter sent to the Food Commissioners of all states and union territories. This command will come into effect from April 1, 2021.

The FSSAI declared that under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2008, it would be mandatory for all food business operators (FBOs) to get a license / registration before starting any food business. The regulator said that under the Food Safety and Standards (Restrictions and Restrictions on Sales) Regulations, 2011, anyone can sell bottled drinking water or mineral water only after the BIS certification mark. BIS license will also be mandatory for renewal.

FSSAI said that many companies producing packaged drinking water and mineral water are working on FSSAI license but do not have a BIS certification mark. Given This ,the BIS license or application for it has been made mandatory for FSSAI license. BIS license will also be mandatory for renewal of the FSSAI license.
