Human Rights Activist Khurram Parvez arrested under terror funding case

NIA conducted raids in Khurram's office on Monday


New Delhi: Human Rights activist Khurram Parvez was arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in connection with its ongoing probe in a terror funding case in Jammu Kashmir on Monday.

According to the anti-terror agency, Mr Khurram was arrested after raiding his residence and office in Srinagar earlier in the day. The probing agency carried out searches with the assistance of Jammu and Kashmir Police and Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel.

Raids were conducted at Mr Parvez's residence in Sonwar and office in Amira Kadal of Srinagar on early Monday among other places in Jammu and Kashmir linked to the case, the agency added.

As per the sources, the human activist Mr Parvez was arrested under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) and various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).

After the raid, Mr Parvez was taken to the agency in a valley for interrogation.

Recently in October, the NIA conducted various raids on the streets of Kashmir including Mr Khurram's office.

Earlier, in 2016, Khurram Parvez was lodged with the Public Safety Act (PSA). He was arrested after a day of travelling to Switzerland. He participated in a session of the UN Human Rights Council. After 76 days of imprisonment, Mr Khurram was released.

Mr Khurram Parvez is a well known human activist from Kashmir. Mr Parvez is the chairperson of the Asian Federation Against Involuntary Disappearances (AFAD) and the programme coordinator of the Jammu Kashmir Coalition of Civil Society (JKCCS). He had lost his leg in a landmine while monitoring the 2004 Parliamentary elections.
