IMD Issues An Orange Alert For Jammu And Kashmir

Heavy Snowfall in J&K


The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Jammu and Kashmir for January 7 and 8. 


As per the information, this decision has been taken due to inclement weather and heavy snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir. 


According to the Met Department, it said, Rainfall and snowfall is expected to increase gradually as the current day progresses.

 

The weather conditions have been forecasted to intensify during the night of January 7and 8, thereby leading to heavy to very heavy rainfall /or snowfall. Adding more it said, However, the conditions are likely to improve from January 9 morning.


The Met Department has also asked the people in the valley not to venture into avalanche-prone areas as its data revealed that the disaster is mostly triggered by heavy snowfall. People have also been advised to follow traffic advisory and maintain proper ventilation inside the rooms.


With the change in weather conditions, several flight operations have been impacted. Few flights have been delayed also few have been rescheduled or cancelled for the last two days. 


According to the tweet, the Srinagar airport also said that "as many as six flights were cancelled during the day and 35 could be operated normally owing to the harsh weather conditions."


Few areas such as the tourist resort of Gulmarg, Sonmarg, Pahalgam, northern and southern parts of Kashmir are witnessing heavy snowfall.
