India creates history by winning Olympic medal after 41 years;

The Indian men's hockey team had won eight gold medals at the Olympic Games between the years 1928-1980.


The Indian men's hockey team showed remarkable resilience in dealing with immense pressure and rewrote history by clinching the Olympic bronze medal after a long wait of 41 years. The Indian hockey team defeated 5-4 Germany in the play-off match and made an unforgettable comeback after four decades at the ongoing Olympic Games on Thursday. The Indian men's hockey team had won eight gold medals at the Olympic Games between the years 1928-1980.

The Indian hockey members who scored goals in today's match are- Simranjeet Singh scored two goals, that is, he scored the first goal in 17th minute with a reverse hit to bring the score 1-1 with the Germans and the last goal in the 34th minute, which turned out to be the game changer. The midfielder Hardik Singh scored in the 27th minute that brought India closer to the rival team with a score of 2-3. Harmanpreet Singh, who is called one of the best drag-flickers in the world, secured a penalty corner in the 29th minute and brought the game to an equal score of 3-3 just a minute before half-time. The veteran defender Rupinder Pal Singh scored the goal in the 31st minute and put India ahead 4-3 off a penalty corner

Lukas Windfeder of Germany scored in the 48th minute and brought the score closer 5-4. However, the Indian team gave their best and defended the last 12 minutes of the match to seal the game. Indian hockey team had won two bronze medals in 1968 and 1972 at the Olympic Games. Meanwhile, the Punjab Government on Thursday announced a cash reward of Rs 1 crore to each of the state hockey players who was part of the men's hockey team that won the medal at the Games.
