India lose 2-5 to Belgium in men's hockey semifinals; last chance left to win medal at Olympics

The Indian men's hockey team suffered a heartbreaking defeat in the semifinals at Tokyo Olympics on Tuesday. India lost 2-5 to world champions Belgium but the team is still in the medal race as it will now compete for bronze on Thursday against either Australia or Germany, whoever loses the second semifinal later in the day.

Harmanpreet Singh (7th) and Mandeep Singh (8th) scored two goals for India in the match. Reigning silver-medallist Belgium's Alexander Hendrickx scored a hat-trick (19th, 49th, 53rd minutes) in the match and maximum number of goals in the tournament, while Loick Luypaert (2nd) and John-John Dohmen (60th) also scored one goal each to seal their second successive entry into the final of the Olympics.

Belgium converted four goals from 14 penalty corners they secured in the match whereas India earned five penalty corners of which they converted one into goal. Hockey India took to Twitter handle and praised team India's efforts by tweeting," You win some, you lose some. You have done us proud."
