Indian classical musician Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan passes away at 89

Ghulam Mustafa Khan received the Padma Shri in 1991, followed by Padma Bhushan in 2006 and Padma Vibhushan in 2018.


Indian classical legendary musician Ustad Ghulam Mustafa Khan passed away at his residence in Bandra at the age of 89 on Sunday, as per his family. Mr Khan's daughter-in-law Namrata Gupta Khan informed about the demise of the veteran. "He was fine in the morning... but during his massage he vomited. His eyes were shut and he was breathing slowly. I tried connecting to doctors but by the time they came, he had already died," she said. He took his last breath at 12:37 pm.

Mr Khan's one half of the body was paralysed after he suffered a brain stroke in 2019. Namrata said the family was in shock due to the sudden death of Mr Khan as he was otherwise doing well. Mr Khan was about to turn 90 on March 3. Namrata also took to her Facebook page and informed about the tragedy. Mr Khan's last rites were done at Santacruz Kabristan.

The veteran was born in a family of musicians in Badaun, Uttar Pradesh. His father Ustad Waris Hussain Khan, himself was a celebrated musician and gave Mr Khan initial vocal training while his mother, Sabri Begum was the daughter of Ustad Inayat Hussain Khan who was referred as the founder of the "Rampur-Sahaswan gharana of music." Mr Khan carried forward the tradition of the family and received accolades nationwide.

Mr Khan received the Padma Shri in 1991, followed by Padma Bhushan in 2006 and Padma Vibhushan in 2018. He was also awarded the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 2003 which is the highest Indian recognition given to practicing artistes. Lata Mangeshkar, A R Rahman and Ustad Amjad Ali Khan paid tributes to the musician.
