Indian flag to be installed at UN Security Council stakeout

India's 2- year tenure will begin on January 4 and its Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador T S Tirumurti will install the tricolour.

India's tricolour will be installed at the United Nations Security Council stakeout on Monday that is the first official working day of the year 2021. India begins its two-year tenure as the non-permanent member of the UNSC. The country's Permanent Representative to the UN, Ambassador T S Tirumurti will install the flag.

Flags of five new incoming UNSC non- permanent members, India, Norway, Kenya, Ireland and Mexico will be installed at the UNSC stakeout. The permanent members of the UNSC are China, France, Russia, the UK and the US while other non-permanent members are Estonia, Niger, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Tunisia and Vietnam.

India will be the UNSC President in August 2021 for a month and will preside over the Council again in 2022. The presidency of the Council is held for a month by each member and the turn of each state member comes according to the English alphabetical order. " Like the changing of the guards, it is the changing of flags from outgoing to the new elected members. This solemn ceremony serves the purpose of affirming and respecting the new members with the recognition they deserve," Kazakhstan's former Permanent Representative to the UN Kairat Umarov had said during the 2019 ceremony.

The tradition of installing a flag during a ceremony was first started by Kazakhstan in the year 2018. It became an annual tradition of the Security Council as it was approved by all 15 UNSC members.
