Indian pugilist Lovlina Borgohain settles for bronze, loses 0-5 in semis

Lovlina Borgohain competed in the 69 kg category in her debut Olympic Games against gold medal favourite Turkish boxer and lost via unanimous decision.

Indian boxer Lovlina Borgohain settled for bronze as she suffered a 0-5 loss to reigning world champion Busenaz Surmeneli of Turkey in the semifinal bout in women's welterweight boxing on Wednesday. Ms Borgohain, who hails from Assam, competed in the 69 kg category in her debut Olympic Games against gold medal favourite Turkish boxer and lost via unanimous decision at the ongoing Tokyo Olympics.

The 23-year-old Indian pugilist, who earlier received warnings from the referee, also lost a point in the second round for not paying attention to his commands. Ms Surmeneli out-punched the Indian with body shots and bullied her in the ring. Nonetheless, Ms Borgohain has won the first Olympic boxing medal for India in nine years and has become the third Indian boxer after Vijender Singh (2008) and MC Mary Kom (2012) to clinch a medal at the Olympics.
