Indian women's hockey team creates history by entering Olympic semifinal for first time

Indian goalkeeper Savita Punia saved all 9 shots that were directed at her.

Indian women's hockey team on Monday gave a spectacular performance and created history by entering the Olympics semifinal round for the first time. The hockey team stunned three-time champions and world no.2 Australia by defeating them with a score of 1-0 in the Tokyo Olympics. This win has reserved a medal match for India for the first time at the Olympics.

In the 22nd minute, drag-flicker Gurjit Kaur converted India’s first penalty corner in the second quarter to stay ahead. It was not just Ms Kaur's goal that sealed the win but also goalkeeper Savita Punia's stellar performance that helped India win the match. Ms Punia saved all 9 shots that were directed at her.

Meanwhile, Indian men's hockey team also entered the semifinals and bridged the 49-year long gap by beating Great Britain 3-1 on Sunday. In the 1972 Munich Games, India had reached the semifinals but lost 0-2 to Pakistan. Women's hockey team will next face Argentina in the semifinals. Argentina defeated Germany 3-0 in the quarterfinals on Monday.
