Kerala rains: Death toll rises to 22; yellow alert for 11 districts

The IMD had predicted low pressure in Arabian Sea near Lakshadweep which resulted in heavy rainfall in Kerala.


Due to heavy rains at least 22 people died in flash floods and landslides in Kerala on Sunday. According to TOI, 13 bodies were recovered from Kottayam district and nine from Idukki district.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had predicted low pressure in Arabian Sea near Lakshadweep which resulted in heavy rainfall in Kerala. However, the low pressure has weakened and the IMD has forecasted heavy rains till Monday evening.

The IMD has issued a yellow alert for 11 districts- Kollam, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Thiruvananthapuram, Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Ernakulam, Malappuram and Kozhikode. Meanwhile, teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed to assist the rescue operations.

According to Revenue Minister K Rajan, the Kerala government has, reportedly, sanctioned immediate assistance of Rs 4 lakh to the families of the deceased while Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan said that 105 relief camps have been set up in the state to shift people from the sensitive areas.
