Maharashtra's Nagpur will go under lockdown for one week from March 15-21 due to sudden surge in the number of cases of COVID-19 in the city. Essential services such as vegetables, fruits, milk and medicines will be available to people as such shops and dairies will stay open. In the last 24 hours, Nagpur reported over 1,800 cases.

Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray hinted at more areas of Maharashtra to go into lockdown in near future as the cases of coronavirus have been on an increase for around a month. "Some areas of Maharashtra will witness strict lockdown measures to curb the spread of the coronavirus infection," said Mr Thackeray. He added that the government will hold a special meeting with officials before coming out with the lockdown measures.

Mr Thackeray got vaccinated under the second phase of the nationwide Covid vaccination drive. The lockdown has been imposed in all the areas that come under the Nagpur Police Commissionerate. The move comes two days after a ''Janata curfew'' was imposed for three days in Maharashtra's Jalgaon district, till 8 am on Monday.
