Lovlina Borgohain confirms first boxing medal for India, enter semifinals

The 23-year-old Indian will next face reigning world champion Busenaz Surmeneli of Turkey in the semi-final bout.

Debutant boxer Lovlina Borgohain confirmed first boxing medal for India as she defeated former world champion Nien-Chin Chen of Taipei to advance to semifinals at Tokyo Olympics on Friday. Lovlina who hails from Assam won the quarterfinal bout with a score of 4-1 in 69 kg category. The 23-year-old Indian will next face reigning world champion Busenaz Surmeneli of Turkey in the semi-final bout.

According to national coach Mohammed Ali Qamar, Borgohain stuck to the strategy of counter-attacking and remained defensive to triumph over her opponent, who had defeated her in the past. He said that Borgohain took advantage of her height and did not try to be aggressive, the reason due to which she had lost to Chen in the previous bout.

The two-time world championships bronze winner has secured a second medal for India by winning the bout. Borgohain, also a two-time Asian Championships bronze-medallist has become second female Indian boxer to clinch a medal at the Olympics after M C Mary Kom who won a bronze in 2012.
