Madhya Pradesh: 4 dead, several trapped after 30 fall into well in Vidisha

The Chief Minister announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh for the kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for the ones who received injuries in the incident.


At least four people have died and several are feared trapped after 30 villagers fell into a well while they were trying to rescue a boy who had fallen into the same well earlier. The incident took place when an RCC wall around a well collapsed in Vidisha district of Madhya Pradesh on Thursday evening, reported The Indian Express. According to the officials, the parapet wall caved in due to the weight of the people who were busy rescuing the boy. The officials said that the level of water in the well is about 20 feet while the depth of the well is 50 feet.

So far, 19 people have been rescued from the spot, reported NDTV. The incident occurred around 8 pm in Lal Pathar area of Ganj Basoda, which is about 50 kms from the district headquarters. Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said that he is monitoring the whole situation and rescue teams are engaged in the operation. Medical Education and district in-charge minister Vishwas Sarang was sent to the spot by the CM. 

The State Disaster Rescue Force (SDRF) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams were pressed into action as soon as the news of the mishap was received, Chief Minister Chouhan said. Mr Chouhan announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh for the kin of the deceased and Rs 50,000 for the ones who got injured in the tragedy.
