Maharashtra: BKC jumbo vaccination centre and 70 other centres closed owing to vaccine shortage

Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said that Mumbai has a total of 120 centres, of which 71 have already run out of the vaccine stock.

Around 70 vaccination centres were forced to shut down due to shortage of Covid vaccine doses in Mumbai on Friday, of which 25 were closed on Thursday afternoon. Meanwhile, the public vaccination centre, BKC jumbo, one of Mumbai's most important commercial zones, was also shut down due to the unavailability of vaccine doses which resulted in protest outside the centre.

"From Day 1 we used to get vaccines a day ahead as buffer stock, till yesterday we got a sufficient number of vials for this centre. Last night we were expecting to get today's dose but it has not come. Now we have only 160 doses," said the Dean, Rajesh Dere, reported NDTV. Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) said that Mumbai has a total of 120 centres, of which 71 have already run out of the vaccine stock. Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar said he has got information that about 76,000 to 1 lakh doses are about to reach Mumbai by today but he does not have any official information regarding this yet.

State Health Minister Rajesh Tope alleged on Thursday that the Centre was discriminating between states as the population of Maharashtra is double the population of Gujarat, yet both states received one crore doses. He said that they needed 40 lakh doses a week and 1.6 crore doses a month. Mr Tope had said that vaccination was halted in parts of the state including Satara, Sangli, Panvel. Maharashtra is the worst affected state during the second wave of the pandemic.
